Jumping off trains, simulation serums and knife-throwing! That’s my first thought when I think of Divergent by Veronica Roth.
Divergent is an action book that describes the future world in Chicago. The world is divided into five factions/groups: Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the peaceful, Candor for the Truthful, Dauntless for the brave and Erudite for the intelligent.
At the age of sixteen, you must decide which one these factions you belong in. The day before you decide, you get put into a test that tells you which faction you belong in, but when you choose, you don’t need to choose the faction result you had in the test.
The story begins with the main character, Beatrice Prior, born in the Abnegation, talking about her dull home and her lively family. She talks about the one mirror in her house, which she is only allowed to look at when her mother cuts her hair. She heads to school the day of the test with her brother, Caleb Prior, who is just several months older than her. She gets called to the test room. A Dauntless woman gives Beatrice a needle and sits her on a huge, reclining chair. Beatrice closes her eyes. That’s how the book started.
This book taught me how to imagine a world in another way. I was hooked when I had just read the very first chapter of Divergent. I would recommend anyone to read this book. There is a lot of violence, though.
Okay, let’s get to know the author of Divergent a little bit better. Veronica Roth was born in New York City on August 19, 1988. Her mom gave her the love of books when she was young by reading to her every night. Veronica Roth studied creative writing in college and found out that she could create imaginary worlds on a single page. She was inspired to write Divergent by following her curiosity. She said she would choose Abnegation as her faction because she thinks the way they live is fascinating.
Divergent is literally addicting! I couldn’t stop myself from reading it. Beatrice describes what everything seems like to her and her adventures everywhere inside of Chicago.
Divergent has won many awards such as the #1 New York Times Bestsellers, GoodReads Choice Awards Favorite Book of the Year, ALA Teens’ Top Ten #1 Favorite Book of the Year, Amazon.com Best Books of the Year and much, much more.
There are also three other books by Veronica Roth you will love! Insurgent is the second book that follows Divergent after that, Allegiant will make you cry! Well, it made ME cry at least. There is also a mini series called Four, which tells the Divergent story in another person’s point of view. Divergent and Insurgent have also been made into movies by Red Wagon Entertainment.
This futuristic, addicting book will be in your hands all day! If you don’t believe me, you should try it! If you would like to know, I would actually choose Dauntless as my faction!
